PHILIPPE LACÔTE
DIRECTOR
Philippe Lacôte grew up in Abidjan next to a cinema called Le Magic. After making several short films and documentaries, he directed his first feature film, Run, which was selected for Un Certain Regard at Cannes in 2014. With Night of the Kings, he continues to explore memory and recent history in Côte d’Ivoire.
SYNOPSIS
Night of the Kings is the story of one night behind bars, as one man’s reign is ending and another’s is beginning – where Shakespeare meets an African prison.
MACA prison in Abidjan is one of the most overcrowded in West Africa. Black Beard, a prisoner, is old and sick, and his rule is being threatened. To hold onto power, he resorts to the “story” ritual, during which one prisoner must tell stories for an entire night. The young pickpocket he chooses is not a storyteller, but he is haunted by the tale of Zama King.
