    SYNOPSIS

9 Temples to Heaven - 9 Wat Su Sawan

A family of 9 takes their grandmother on a merit-making trip to 9 temples in 1 day, hoping to prolong her life, but their trip takes an unexpected turn.

After hearing an alarming prophesy from a well-known seer that his mother will not have much time to live, Sakol initiates a 1-day pilgrimage to 9 temples as a solution. Just 2 weeks before her birthday, the authoritative Sakol not only takes his weak mother on the trip, but he asks the whole family to join. Different in ages and agendas, each of whom carry the promise of accumulating more merit by the power of 9, the magic number that many Thais believe to bring good luck.

    En savoir plus

    STATEMENT OF INTENT

The film is the reimagining of my personal experiences going on these trips with my family over the years. Many Thais believe that making offerings to monks at 9 temples in 1 day can bring you to the highest state of karma and maximized longevity. Thai Buddhism are the intermingles of Hinduism, Animism, and many other ideologies. Accumulating merit is our way of life especially for older generations. However, most from my and younger generation view Buddhism only as a philosophy. This view, surprisingly, is closer to many in the west, more than our parents' and relative's view. The tension, the push and pull between older and newer beliefs are seen everywhere in the world. With this film, I want to create a compassionate tribute to families living under the different sets of faith and viewpoint, influenced by larger institutional powers that loom over them, may it be from religion or politics.

  • FRANCISCO BAHIA

    DIRECTOR

Francisco Bahia is a Brazilian filmmaker master in Geography. Directed short and half length films that address issues of territory and identity selected and awarded at different Brazilian festivals. Babylon, is his first feature film as director. He also works as cinematographer in documentaries for TV and cinema.

    SYNOPSIS

    Babylon

An Haitian immigrant needs to investigate the death of an old friend, and the only way to do it will be facing voodoo forces, which he distanced himself out of fear.

An Haitian immigrant in Brazil, Espera, is always thinking about a new way to get the money he sends monthly to his family in Haiti. One day, an old friend from home, asks him to recognize her brother’s corpse at a morgue. Espera needs to find out the cause of this death. He knows that the only way to do so is through voodoo, but he thinks that bad things can happen if he copes with spirits.

    En savoir plus

    STATEMENT OF INTENT

Besides a filmmaker, I'm a geographer. That’s why the story of Espera, Babylon’s protagonist, called my attention. It brings several elements for a creative investigation of contemporary migration from a personal perspective. I met Espera in 2015, when we started a job together. His incredibly communicative ability captivated me and I started to film him. One day, he asked me to meet him with my camera at a city morgue. He was there to identify the body of an old friend, death. This tragic event, revealing the violence that subdues the black immigrant in Brazil, was a watershed in the project. Since then, Espera and I have made a pact: to make a movie that, by showing the richness of the worldview of the immigrants, becomes a tool in the construction of bonds of respect with the Haitian community.

    STATEMENT OF INTENT

"It looked truly beautiful. Made out of white carved stone, every piece perfectly equal in size, red tile over, everything surrounded by carved white marble. It shined under sun like the stars had fell from the sky. If only blood and sweat could shine forever, it would be shining there even today." This is a quotation from Gina's memoirs, which are, first o all, a document of emotions – it is a witness of human feelings and traumas, and secondly it is a document holding many crucial historical facts. Based on the historical records, 16 101 people had been sent to political camps – many of them did not survived. Gina was one of 150 imprisoned Montenegrin women. Women that had survived camps did not spread their words anywhere in public, neither they were ask to do it – the female trauma has never been studied or talked about.

Ash Mayfair was born in Vietnam and received her MFA in filmmaking at NYU Tisch School of the Arts. Her feature debut, The third wife (2018), premiered at Toronto International Film Festival and won the NETPAC Jury Award. It also won prizes at San Sebastian, Chicago, Cairo and other film festivals.

    SYNOPSIS

Skin of youth - On Ao Tuoi Tre

Skin of Youth is about what it means to look at the idea of identity, womanhood and family against the backdrop of late 1990s Vietnam, from the perspective of youths who don’t fit into the accepted social norms.

1998 Vietnam, San and Nam court the criminal underworld of Saigon to find enough money for San’s gender reassignment surgery. The young lovers are unaware that the price they have to pay will test their love and the limit of their humanity.

    En savoir plus

    STATEMENT OF INTENT

Skin of Youth is about people clinging together to survive in a world that gives them no space. It is a message of hope, for myself and other youths still living in these oppressive circumstances, that broken pieces will eventually find a home amongst each other. Because of the age and the specificity of San’s transgender identity, the majority of the cast are non-actors. Narratively, San is going through a major part of her transition on screen. Therefore, we will follow the actress playing this role as she makes this journey in real life. Stylistically, the film is fast-paced, raw and edgy. The vision is almost docu-fiction as we make use of real locations and people.

    SYNOPSIS

The nights still smell of gunpowder - As noites ainda cheiram á pôlvora

Concerned with the fragmented memories of my childhood during the civil war in Mozambique, I return to my grandmother’s village to reveal the untold stories, which still hunt my generation.

This film will take place in the village where I grew up and where all my childhood memories were created. For me, the village was always a paradise. But what I didn’t realize was that I was living in the middle of a civil war. Today I am going back to confront that childhood memory with the reality and circumstances of the political situation that my country is facing.

    En savoir plus

    STATEMENT OF INTENT

The constant question of my cinema is collective memory. I live in a country where is constantly perpetrating a collective genocide to our own history, our own memory. This project is about memory and its fragmented nature and the need to document it when there is the danger of losing it. A personal film that’s juxtaposed with the dark period of the civil war, the moral damages and traumas that lasted 16 years, and still left open wounds. The quite violent voices of raped women and child soldiers continue to scream silently. As my generation is facing new tensions, the ghosts of war are tireless and are waiting in the darkness. The rifles may be no more, but the nights still smell of gunpowder.

    DIRECTOR

Venezuelan director, screenwriter, producer and assistant director. She is passionate about telling stories in images and sounds that move the heart, body and soul of those who see them. As a woman, Latina filmmaker, immigrant, I want to tell stories with an authorial character, especially of a social nature, giving voice to minorities.  Her shorts Strangers (2015) and The Child (2016-premiere at the Montreal World Film Festival) were exhibited in the commercial cinemas of Venezuela.  In 2019, she was part of CineQuaNonLab and with her first feature Without a name she was part of Berlin Talent.

Marcela is schizophrenic. She keeps her condition under control by drawing what happens around her. She falls in love with Joaquin, an immigrant whose son will soon be brought from Venezuela. She is terrified because she also has a son, taken from her from lack of care due to her condition. She embarks in overcoming her fears, to recover her son and have a family with Joaquin.

    STATEMENT OF INTENT

I confess a passion for the human mind and its enigmas and for that need to be branded as strange, to those who don’t fit a convention on what is appropriate behavior. In Without a Name, I highlight what as a woman, Latin American and filmmaker, am interested in deepening. I give voice to Marcela, a woman, whose schizophrenic condition, makes her believe that she cannot be a good mother. Through the character of Joaquín, I highlight a topic that touches me very closely: migration. Their world of the dreamlike and the real merge, as in life itself. I present, how these characters, two "weirdos" can be together and fall in love. Love will impel them to achieve the impossible
