    DIRECTOR

Sompot Chidgasornpongse has a bachelor’s degree in architecture from Chulalongkorn university and an MFA in Film/Video from California Institute of the Arts (CalArts). His short films have screened at Rotterdam, Oberhausen, Viennale, Visions du Réel and Indielisboa. His feature documentary, Railway Sleepers (2016), had its world premiere in competition at Busan, and European premiere at the Berlinale. The film then went to True/False, Sheffield Doc/Fest, Melbourne, RIDM, and TIDF. Sompot has worked with Apichatpong Weerasethakul as assistant director on many films, including Tropical Malady (2004), Syndromes and a Century (2006), Cemetery of Splendour (2015), and most recently Memoria (2020).

    SYNOPSIS

    9 Temples to Heaven

A family of 9 takes their grandmother on a merit-making trip to 9 temples in 1 day, hoping to prolong her life, but their trip takes an unexpected turn.

After hearing an alarming prophesy from a well-known seer that his mother does not have much time to live, Sakol proposes a 1-day pilgrimage to 9 temples as a solution. Just 2 weeks before her birthday, the authoritative Sakol not only takes his weak mother on the trip, but he asks the whole family to join. Of differing ages and agendas, they each carry the promise of accumulating more merit by the power of 9, the magic number that many Thais believe to bring good luck.

    En savoir plus

    STATEMENT OF INTENT

The film is the reimagining of my personal experiences going on these trips with my family over the years. Many Thais believe that making offerings to monks at 9 temples in 1 day can bring you to the highest state of karma and maximized longevity. Thai Buddhism are the intermingles of Hinduism, Animism, and many other ideologies. Accumulating merit is our way of life especially for older generations. However, most from my and younger generation view Buddhism only as a philosophy. This view, surprisingly, is closer to many in the west, more than our parents' and relative's view. The tension, the push and pull between older and newer beliefs are seen everywhere in the world. With this film, I want to create a compassionate tribute to families living under the different sets of faith and viewpoint, influenced by larger institutional powers that loom over them, may it be from religion or politics.

    SYNOPSIS

    A pair of leather clogs

A family and political drama with elements of comedy, set up in Almaty.

Due to an upcoming international event, while the authorities are emptying the streets of Almaty of the homeless, Zhanna, a 42-year-old single mother and a prominent company executive, is asked to organise a concert in honour of the President.

    STATEMENT OF INTENT

Although my first film “Bad Bad Winter” was completely tragic, “A pair of leather clogs” will have comedy elements. However, both films talk about exactly the same problems. This story is all about being powerful or powerless; when the powerless grow up, can any balance be ever achieved, and how ?

  • FRANCISCO BAHIA

    DIRECTOR

Francisco Bahia is a Brazilian filmmaker master in Geography. He has directed shorts and featurettes that address the issues of territory and identity, which have been selected and received awards at several Brazilian festivals. Babylon is his first feature film as a director. He also works as a cinematographer in documentaries for TV and cinema.

    SYNOPSIS

    Babylon

A Haitian immigrant needs to investigate the death of an old friend, and the only way to do it is to encounter voodoo forces, from which he had distanced himself out of fear.

A Haitian immigrant in Brazil, Espera is always thinking about new ways to get the money he sends monthly to his family in Haiti. One day, an old friend from home asks him to identify her brother’s corpse at a morgue. Espera needs to find out the cause of this death. He knows that the only way to do so is through voodoo, but he thinks that bad things can happen if he enters into contact with spirits. This investigation into the death of his friend brings us on a discovery of Sao Paolo’s Haitian community and its music.

    En savoir plus

    STATEMENT OF INTENT

In addition to being a filmmaker, I'm a geographer. That’s why the story of Espera, Babylon’s protagonist, got my attention. It offers several elements for a creative investigation of contemporary migration from a personal perspective. I met Espera in 2015, when we started a job together. His incredibly communicative ability captivated me and I started to film him. One day, he asked me to meet him with my camera at a city morgue. He was there to identify the body of an old friend. This tragic event, revealing the violence that subdues the black immigrant in Brazil, was a watershed in the project. Since then, Espera and I made a pact: to make a movie that, by showing the richness of immigrants’ worldview, becomes a tool in the construction of bonds of respect with the Haitian community.

    DIRECTOR

She is also a casting director for local and international productions such as Amin by Philippe Faucon (La Quinzaine 2018) and the Amazon series ZeroZeroZer’. She was also a member of the casting team for Atlantics (Atlantique) by Mati Diop (Grand Prix du Jury at Cannes 2019). Iman is currently working on her first feature film, Coura + Oulèye. She took part in the Realness Screenwriters’ Residency in 2019 and Berlinale Talents in 2020.

    SYNOPSIS

    Coura + Oulèye

Born into a polygamous family, two young sisters get to know each other after the death of their father, on a journey across Senegal.

Coura and Oulèye, two teenage sisters whose mothers are co-spouses, are forced to travel together across Senegal, as they search for their father’s testament. But their search takes an unexpected turn when they meet Ngoné, a young woman with a shady past.

    En savoir plus

    STATEMENT OF INTENT

Coura + Oulèye is a story about women, where three generations clash, help each other and evolve together. I wanted to explore what it means to be a woman in our African societies today. What is the right balance between tradition and modernity? How can we stay true to ourselves in a society where the group is prioritized? The starting point for this film was the desire to explore the relationship between two young sisters born into a polygamous marriage. Polygamy, which is common in Senegal, has often been addressed from the women’s perspective, but rarely from the perspective of children with different mothers and their relationships. Fraternity is a strong yet complicated bond, so I wanted to follow these sisters’ journey in that sense. This journey, which will bring them far from the pressure of their family and the society, enables them to question their identity and their role in their community.

    DIRECTOR

Sara Stijović was born in Montenegro in 1997, she is in her final year of her Bachelor’s degree in Film and TV directing at FDA Cetinje. She is specializing in documentary film. She is an Al Jazeera Ambassador and has taken part in many international talent campuses and projects, in Iran, China, Italy, and the Balkans. She is currently in the development phase of Gina, her first feature film.

    SYNOPSIS

    Gina

Gina is the story of Gina Markuš – a young Montenegrin woman who was imprisoned during the 1950's in Yugoslavia and sent to the Naked Island (Goli Otok) to serve her sentence. A few years before committing suicide, she put everything on paper...

The story follows Marina, Gina Markuš's niece, on her way to the Naked Island she is visiting for the second time – the first time as a baby seen in a photograph and now as a grown up woman. Marina and Gina are telling us the first female story of the Yugoslavian camps – a story about love that gave them the will to live; a story about trauma, pills and psychiatric hospitals, homicides and a suicide; and, ultimately, about hope.

    En savoir plus

    STATEMENT OF INTENT

"It looked truly beautiful. Made out of white carved stone, every piece perfectly equal in size, red tile roof, everything surrounded by carved white marble. It shined in the sun as if the stars had fallen from the sky. If only blood and sweat could shine forever, it would be shining there even today." This is a quotation from Gina's memoirs, which are, first and foremost, a document of emotions – it is the evidence of human feelings and traumas, and it is also a document that holds many crucial historical facts. Based on historical records, 16,101 people were sent to political camps – many of them did not survive. Gina was one of 150 imprisoned Montenegrin women. Women that had survived camps did not speak about their past in public, neither they were asked to – female trauma has never been studied or talked about.

Her feature debut, The third wife (2018), premiered at Toronto International Film Festival and won the NETPAC Jury Award. It also won prizes at San Sebastian, Chicago, Cairo and other film festivals.

    SYNOPSIS

    Skin of youth

Skin of Youth is about what it means to look at the idea of identity, womanhood and family against the backdrop of late 1990s Vietnam, from the perspective of youths who don’t fit into the accepted social norms.

1998 Vietnam, San and Nam court the criminal underworld of Saigon to find enough money for San’s gender reassignment surgery. The young lovers are unaware that the price they have to pay will test their love and the limit of their humanity.

    En savoir plus

    STATEMENT OF INTENT

Skin of Youth is about people clinging together to survive in a world that gives them no space. It is a message of hope, for myself and other youths still living in these oppressive circumstances, that broken pieces will eventually find a home amongst each other. Because of the age and the specificity of San’s transgender identity, the majority of the cast are non-actors. The narrative follows San as she goes through a major part of her transition on screen. Therefore, we will follow the actress playing this role as she makes this journey in real life. Stylistically, the film is fast-paced, raw and edgy. The vision is almost docu-fiction as we make use of real locations and people.

    SYNOPSIS

The nights still smell of gunpowder

Concerned with the fragmented memories of my childhood during the civil war in Mozambique, I return to my grandmother’s village to reveal the untold stories, which still haunt my generation.

This film will take place in the village where I grew up and where all my childhood memories were created. For me, the village was always a paradise. But what I didn’t realize was that I was living in the middle of a civil war. Today I am going back to confront that childhood memory with the reality and circumstances of the political situation that my country is facing.

    En savoir plus

    STATEMENT OF INTENT

The constant question of my cinema is collective memory.

I live in a country where a collective genocide is being constantly perpetrated on our own history, our own memory.

This project is about memory and its fragmented nature and the need to document it when there is the danger of losing it. It is a personal film that is juxtaposed with the dark period of the civil war, the moral damages and traumas that lasted 16 years, and the open wounds that remain. The violence is felt in the voices of raped women and child soldiers who continue to scream silently. As my generation is facing new tensions, the ghosts of war are tirelessly waiting in the shadows. The rifles may be no more, but the nights still smell of gunpowder.

  • VALERIA VALENTINA BOLIVAR

    DIRECTOR

Valeria Valentina Bolivar is a Venezuelan director, screenwriter, producer and assistant director. She is passionate about telling stories in images and sounds that move the heart, body and soul of those who see them. As a woman, Latina filmmaker and immigrant, she aims to tell stories with an authorial character, especially of a social nature, giving voice to minorities.  Her shorts Strangers (2015) and The Child (which premiered at the 2016 Montreal World Film Festival) were shown in the commercial cinemas of Venezuela.  In 2019, she took part in CineQuaNonLab, and with her first feature Without a name she took part in Berlinale Talents.

    SYNOPSIS

    Without a name

Marcela is schizophrenic. She meets Joaquín, who has just emigrated from Venezuela where he left his son. They fall in love, and Marcela tries to overcome her condition to recover her son and have a family.

Marcela is schizophrenic. She keeps her condition under control by drawing everything that happens around her. When she falls in love with Joaquín, an immigrant who wants to bring his son to the Dominican Republic, she locks herself into her own bubble. She is terrified because she also has a son, who was taken from her because of her condition. But Joaquín doesn’t abandon her; he enters into her world and with his help, she learns to overcome her fears, so she can recover her son and have a family with Joaquin.

    En savoir plus

    STATEMENT OF INTENT

I confess to having a passion for the human mind and its enigmas; and I’m fascinated by humanity’s need to brand as strange anyone who doesn’t correspond to the conventions of appropriate behavior. In Without a Name, I highlight issues I am interested in deepening as a woman, Latin American and filmmaker. I give a voice to Marcela, a woman whose schizophrenic condition makes her believe that she cannot be a good mother. Through the character of Joaquín, I focus on a topic that affects me personally: migration. Their dreamlike world merges with the real world, as it does in life itself. I depict how these characters, two "weirdos," can be together and fall in love. Love will impel them to achieve the impossible.

    SYNOPSIS

    Seeking Haven for Mr. Rambo

A man can remain astray for a long time. But once he finds his destiny, he may have to pay for it with his life.

Hassan and his dog Rambo find themselves in a complicated situation. Rambo becomes hunted overnight by Hassan's neighbour Karem. This pushes Hassan to improvise to find a way out of the country and to save Rambo from an unknown fate.

    En savoir plus

    STATEMENT OF INTENT

In February 2015, a video circulated on social media of a dog tied to a lamppost in a neighbourhood. Around the dog stood seven men holding knives and cutting the dog, which howled with rage and pain, trying to leap at them. Although the dog was tied up, the men seemed afraid of it. Then one man steps in and hits the dog hard on the head, killing it on the spot. I feel that we and stray animals have become so alike. We have no price; we are being killed, chased, imprisoned and tortured, which is why we are always looking over our shoulders, not knowing from where the danger will arrive. My film is based on the story of this video. The dog, Rambo, faces the same crises as a crowd of vagabonds insist on murdering it in front of everybody. The only difference between the two tales is Hassan, the protagonist, fights to save the dog until he succeeds in finding a safer sanctuary.

  • KEYWAN KARIMI

    REALISATEUR

Born in 1985, Karimi is an Iranian filmmaker of Kurdish origin. His short films were awarded in numerous international film festivals. His documentary Writing on the City (2015), which focuses on the graffiti on Tehran walls between the 1979 Islamic Revolution and the 2009 re-election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, caused Karimi to be arrested and held in isolation in December 2013. In October 2015, he was condemned to six years in prison and 223 lashes for "offending Islamic sacredness and propaganda against the system". In 2016, a few weeks before beginning his sentence, he made DRUM, his first feature film. The film premiered during Venice International Film Critic’s Week at the 73rd Venice Film Festival.

Do you know anything about Omid ?

This film is about the dark years of Iran in the 1980s, just after the revolution when many political prisoners were put in prison under sentence...

A couple in their forties live in an urban no-man’s-land in the suburbs of Teheran. Reza works as a handyman. Maryam is a childminder. They grieve for their deceased son, Omid, by pouring their love into the cat he adopted. One day, the cat disappears. They go on the hunt for it with increasing desperation.

    STATEMENT OF INTENT

My second film is about the dark years of Iran in the 1980s, just after the revolution when many political prisoners were put in prison under sentence. This period has even been repressed in the collective memory of the Iranian people, the level of oppression was so extreme. I decided to make a film about this period because all struggles are only possible through the collective memory of past and present struggles.

At the end of the eighties, and the end of the Iran-Iraq war, many of this prisoners died and were killed. Their bodies were transported to various places in whole of Iran. One of these places is in the south of Tehran. The executions and burial processes were secret. People disappeared secretly in the night and then transported and dumped in unmarked graves. During the trials, the prisoners were asked one question: " Are you ready to repent?" If the victim was a sinner then he deserved it, and if he was not guilty, then he was allowed to go Paradise. Some of them survived and went back to live in Tehran or other cities...
