    DIRECTOR

Xaisongkham Induangchanthy, a 2012 Asian Film Academy alumnus, in 2015 completed a Master’s Degree in Filmmaking in New York under the Fulbright Scholarship. He is also an alumnus of Southeast Asia Fiction Film Lab (SEAFIC) 2018 and Talents Tokyo 2018. His debut feature film project, Raising a Beast, won SEAFIC-TFL Award, and Talents Tokyo’s Special Mention.

    SYNOPSIS

    Raising a Beast

Two Hmong siblings with diverging destinies are responsible for grooming a bull into a prize-fighter that will earn the family money and honour.

When their father becomes paralyzed, two Hmong siblings have to care for their bull. The younger sibling, Neng, laments his mundane village life and wants to escape to become a singer in a city. His older sister, Ying, secretly trains the bull to join bullfights to earn money to support Neng’s pursuit, even though it is against their father’s will and tribal tradition.

    STATEMENT OF INTENT

In my story, Ying is the main protagonist who upholds some expected traditions, but is not afraid to break the norms when necessary; she is the one who glues the family together. Her character is drawn from the Hmong women whom I have worked with in the past. I have heard many heart-breaking stories about how Hmong women are still unfairly treated. Their voices are hardly heard. Right now, as a filmmaker, I am in a position to tell their stories. But instead of focusing on women being suppressed in a suppressive and patriarchal society, I want to portray Hmong women as determined and dignified, despite the overwhelming odds they face.

    DIRECTOR

Dominic Sangma has just finished his first feature film titled MA•AMA. He is a graduate from Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute. He worked in National Film and Development Corporation Ltd. for two years before he opened his own production company called ANNA FILMS. He also teaches Direction and Script Writing at the Film and Television Institute, Itanagar, India.

    SYNOPSIS

    Rapture - Rimdogittanga

As the village is gripped by the fear of child-kidnapper, the church prophesizes about the coming of apocalyptic darkness that will last for 80 days. For Kasan (male, 10), the village has never been more fearful.

As the church prophesizes about the coming of apocalyptic darkness, the child kidnapper stalks around at night. The villagers frantically prepare to tackle these two impending fears, but the kidnapper becomes more aggressive with each passing night. Slowly their fear turns to fury and when they catch a stranger visiting the village, something is lost in translation; they lynch him to vent their anger.

    STATEMENT OF INTENT

Intolerance, mob lynching, anti-secularism, and war-mongering are terms we often hear in India nowadays. Fanatic leaders and staunch nationalists act like watchdogs to curb freedom of expression and are constantly scheming to divide the nation in the name of religion, caste and class for their own benefits. In moments like these, people are gripped with utter confusion, losing the sense of discernment between good and evil. The film entitled Rapture, with a Christian connotation, denotes the disappearance of good souls from the earth before the end of time. Though I don't subscribe to the miraculous uplifting of good souls to heaven by angels, I do believe that the disappearance and death of many innocent lives having committed no fault, pushes us closer to the impending disaster. In the film, I want to explore the idea of mass reaction when people are provoked through fear, anger, and confusion.

    DIRECTOR

Based in Dhaka, Bangladesh, Mahde Hasan is an introspective and visually keen screenwriter and director. His short films Death of a Reader (2018), Where is the Friend's Home (2017) and I Am Time (2013) have been screened and received awards at Locarno International Film Festival three years in a row (2016–2018). His first feature film project, Sand City, won the CNC development grant.

    SYNOPSIS

    Raising a Beast

A monk, a materialist young man and a woman from an ethnic minority are connected through the unstable element of sand as they exist through a web of fantasy, spiritual practices and repressed sexuality in the ruthless metropolis of Dhaka.

Emma sets out on her scooter every week to pick up sand for her cat litter. One day, she finds an amputated finger in the sand and gradually develops a strange bond with the lone finger. The monk, Karuna, tries to concentrate on building a sand mandala but the constant noise from the surrounding areas distract him. Hasan steals sand from a sand-washing plant to make glass at home that slowly leads to his own destruction.

    STATEMENT OF INTENT

I have been both a subject and an observer of the city of Dhaka all my life. With this film, I want to focus my gaze on deconstructing the monolith of this city. I want to join my camera in searching for the spirit of this city and its citizens. In this process, I want to trace the journey of my tormented soul and the roads it takes through the metropolis. This film is my chance to make a journey into my reality and come face to face with my own story, instead of escaping it. Through this journey, I want to explore the many facets of urban survival, fantasy, sexuality and religion. I also want to weave a story by exploring my own emotions with the city and depict how this city constantly occupies my thoughts and creations.

  • KANTARAMA GAHIGIRI

    DIRECTOR

Kantarama Gahigiri is a Rwandan-Swiss filmmaker. Her first feature film Tapis Rouge has received awards worldwide, including TV5Monde Best Picture, followed by a theatrical release in France in May 2017. She is now developing Tanzanite, an Afrofuturistic thriller that takes place in colorful Nairobi, and she participated in Realness, an African screenwriters’ residency, with the film.

    SYNOPSIS

    Tanzanite

Tanzanite is a female-centric thriller, and an irreverent Afrofuturistic critique of the current state of affairs in Nairobi. Tanzanite is about East Africa, the politics, the culture, the future of its people and the need to reclaim its own story.

In a lawless Kenya, a decade after the 2030 great mineral war, little Adea, abducted child miner, finds a large tanzanite gem and triggers a violent chain reaction involving a traditional ninja gang and the eccentric and notoriously corrupt Mike Sankara, Minister of Culture. Will Machachari, the once famous zany detective, outsmart all of them and find the tanzanite before it destroys her community?

    En savoir plus

    STATEMENT OF INTENT

Urban East African spaces, and Nairobi in particular, are a fascinating mix of modernity and tradition, injustice and solidarity, hope and despair, wealth and destitution. It is exactly that complexity that I want to capture in Tanzanite, projected in a near future. Tanzanite is a thriller with an absurd, whacky, insolent, irreverent tone; an Afrofuturistic story with comedic potential; and an irreverent genre film with a strong and distinct visual identity, reminiscent of the work of Ana Lily Amirpour (The Bad Batch, A Girl…) and the project Dune by Alejandro Jodorowsky. By making this film, I finally have the opportunity to tell a story that addresses and challenges my culture, my heritage and who I am as a person. This film allows me to question the path on which we are walking, as Africans, and the direction in which we are headed if nothing changes, drastically and rapidly.

    DIRECTOR

Born in 1982, graduated in Cinema by Universidad del Cine, Buenos Aires. His works were screened in festivals such as Cannes, Berlinale, Rotterdam, Locarno, Oberhausen and Karlovy Vary. A full retrospective of his shorts took place at the Cinémathèque Française, in 2013. The French Teacher will be his second feature, after his debut with Elon Doesn’t Believe in Death.

    SYNOPSIS

The French Teacher - A Professora de francês

With this film, combining the genre film and social realism, I propose a study of character that plunges into a narrative that confuses the real with the imaginary, in a dense dreamlike suspense that creates a metaphor on the rise of terror within the "traditional Brazilian family".

Graça gives private lessons of French in order to support herself in a big Brazilian metropolis. As an independent black woman of middle-low class, Graça sees herself confronted by the obscure aspect of religious fanaticism, when obliged to live with an extremist evangelical family that gradually entangles the teacher in a mysterious way towards the loss of reason.

    En savoir plus

    STATEMENT OF INTENT

What originally moves the project of this film is the desire to reflect about the intolerance and prejudice on race, belief and gender, or, in short, the usual inability of some fractions from contemporary society to deal with what is different from what is considered "normal". For that, we have chosen to look toward radical relations that may result from the way individuals relate to faith, especially in an extremist bias environment. All over the world, this extremism is becoming increasingly terrifyingly visible. This past January, Jair Bolsonaro took office as President of Brazil, an extremist right-wing politician who defends that women doesn’t have the same intelligence as man, that homosexuals are “like this” because they haven’t been beat enough when child, and the values of the traditional family above all things. With all that, we decided to make a film that combines elements of suspense and terror to portray the emerging social tensions of contemporary Brazil.

    DIRECTOR

Francisco Paparella was born in Buenos Aires in 1984. In 2009 he established his independent production company, Río Azul Films. In 2013 he directed, wrote and produced his first feature Zanjas, which premiered at the Raindance Film Festival 2015. Paparella strongly believes in the power of sordidness and as a visceral way of telling stories.

    SYNOPSIS

    Three Brothers - Tres Hermanos

Three Brothers is a voyeuristic film that deeply enters into the idea of masculinity: a spy’s view of manhood. Where does this concept come from? How does violence define these characters? How do you inherit machismo?

Three brothers, hunters and heavy metal aficionados, struggle with their personal issues in the dense Argentinian Patagonia. Meanwhile, the neighbouring river threatens their farm with flooding that threatens to ruin the harvest.

    En savoir plus

    NOTE D'INTENTION

Three Brothers goes deeper into the Patagonian subject I started to explore with my directorial debut Zanjas. I feel an urgent need to continue to explore the shades and characters that I grew up with in the South of Argentina. I’m determined to portraying these homoerotic masculine figures, who are battling with severe, internal pressure that they never seem to overcome. They do not understand the meaning of compassion: this is the foundation on which their hermetic masculine nature lies. In a way, our project wishes to portray that these types of men are reaching the end of an era. This is the end of their lineage. The Oldest will leave the town, without being recognized or remembered by his daughter. The Middle One will be taken by the river. And the Youngest will fight with his homosexuality his entire life. The Cardenas lineage will finish at the same moment the movie does.

    DIRECTOR

Reem Morsi’s short films received many awards. Reem participated in Berlinale Talents/Script Station & TIFF Talents, CFC’s & WIDC’s Directors’ Labs. Morsi shadowed the director on The Handmaid’s Tale. Her first feature film Hate (2019) is planned to be shot this year, with support from Telefilm Canada. Her award-winning feature-length script Bootleg participated at Realness & Nipkow residencies in 2018.

    SYNOPSIS

    Bootleg - الممنوعات

This story is about women’s right to sexual pleasure and the fear of womanhood, which manifests as the need to control women through shaming their sexuality and making female pleasure a taboo.

Bootleg is a feminist dramatic comedy that takes place in present-day Cairo. Roukaya is an outwardly obedient Egyptian Muslim woman living in Canada in an unsatisfactory marriage. She discovers sexual pleasure through sex toys. She decides to go back to Egypt and, together with two other women, starts a risky underground sex toy manufacturing business. As the business blooms, it attracts unwanted attention.

    En savoir plus

    STATEMENT OF INTENT

Women aren’t given the freedom to value their own sexual pleasure, as society has falsely propagated the belief that it is the man’s right to fully enjoy and chase sex. For women, sexual shame is a cultural phenomenon, deeply embedded in the explicit and implicit messaging surrounding women and sex. In childhood, many girls undergo the traumatizing practice of female genital mutilation (FGM) and all its long-term side effects, depriving them of the possibility of sexual pleasure. This way, women will not be tempted to have premarital sex and will not succumb to the temptation. Ridiculously enough, women are the sole bearers of the responsibility of keeping the moral code with absolutely no repercussions for men. This is not a film about sex toys, nor a story about oppressed women and oppressive men. This is a story about questioning our reality, seeking control and the discovery of the self.

A suspenseful drama about an overbearing widow and her son, set in a crocodile farm in a small town in Java, Indonesia.

Johan and Mama are very close. Mama is very controlling towards Johan. One day, Johan falls in love with Arumi. Mama feels jealous and then starts to get violent. When Arumi is raped by her boss’s son and his friends, Johan wants to get revenge. But Mama has other plans for Johan and Arumi.

    STATEMENT OF INTENT

I live in a society that still clings to this tradition called “family values”. This tradition is also imposed by the government with their Family Planning program, initiated by the New Order regime. Indonesian society fetishized the family concept up to a point that the New Order leader and his wife were often addressed as Father and Mother of Indonesia. In 1998, the image of Indonesia as a large peaceful and tranquil family was forever shattered. Our Father and Mother left us while the nation was engulfed in riots. This traumatic event led me to re-evaluate the family values that are imposed by the state and society. The Indonesian Family is essentially an institution where the power structure is realized in the name of love and devotion. My intention in making this film is to question this ideology called family.

    Fouledh

A dual between body and soul in Tunisia’s biggest steel plant.

In Tunisia’s biggest steel plant, about to be sold off to a private firm, four workers suffer from physical and psychological trauma after the death of a close colleague in an oven explosion, which they all witnessed. The four workers see a psychologist in the plant’s medical centre, who helps them deal with their trauma.

    STATEMENT OF INTENT

The film tells the tragic and moving story of four traumatized workers who witnessed the accident and death of their colleague. From this psychiatric approach, the film deals with the state of trauma and shock, as well as their loss of meaning and the very many physical ailments. Through their eyes, we discover the fascinating world of steel and fusion, and of resistance and courage. Where the workers must confront their own demons to survive, they must also confront the system in order to save their plant from bankruptcy and privatization. This is a poetic and political film that pays tribute to the forgotten generations of fathers who sacrificed their lives to build modern-day Tunisia. It is also a film about inheritance and the passing down from one generation to the next of the values of work, dignity and sacrifice.

  • SIMPLICE GANOU

    DIRECTOR

Simplice is a Burkinabé director who specializes in creative documentaries. He directed several films, most recently Koro du Bakoro in 2017, his first feature-length documentary on street children. The world première of the film took place at the Visions du Réel festival, and it received the Tanit d’Or prize at Carthage in 2017.

    SYNOPSIS

    Religiously Modified Organism

In Burkina Faso, practising a “revealed” religion means a person is “normal”, or socially integrated. The director turns to his family group and his varied religious past to start a conversation and reflect on religious practices and beliefs as he experienced them. It is an opportunity to bring together the different spiritual sentiments needed to quench his personal thirst to make films.

    STATEMENT OF INTENT

I grew up in an animist village. I then discovered, learned about and practiced Catholicism at secondary school. A trip to Mali turned me into a Muslim for a few months. My mother has been a practicing Protestant for more than 30 years. In 2014, she went on a pilgrimage to Israel, where Jesus was born. She would like me to be a protestant like her. Today, my Cartesian way of thinking has won over religious dogma. I only obey my own commandments. I am Simplice, a poor fisherman who wants to do one thing: MAKE FILMS. This film is the story of a return to the past for a better future. So, I’m going back to my animist roots, back to the Catholics, Protestants and Muslims to ask everyone to carry out rituals, prayers, teachings and blessings so that I can make films and be happy with my decision.
