• AICHA MACKY

    DIRECTOR

Aicha Macky was born in 1982 in Zinder, Niger. After training as a sociologist, she began making documentaries. In 2016, she directed her third short film, The Fruitless Tree, a documentary which won prizes around the world (AMAA, Hotdocs, Munich Dokfest, FESPACO, TFC). It has been broadcast by many television channels, including NHK, Deutsche Welle, ORF and TV5Monde.

    SYNOPSIS

This film is Aicha Macky’s ode to her country. Like a shadow in her home city, she attempts to understand how young people become radicalized through gangs.

Young people without work, most of whom are looking to leave the country, have joined the ranks of gangs perpetrating violence in the town of Zinder, Niger. Locally, they are called the “In Palais”. Using my skills as a sociologist and my passion for film, my film will explore the origins of this violence, which is taking over her country and the continent.

    SYNOPSIS

Night of the Kings is the story of one night behind bars, as one man’s reign is ending and another’s is beginning – where Shakespeare meets an African prison.

MACA prison in Abidjan is one of the most overcrowded in West Africa. Black Beard, a prisoner, is old and sick, and his rule is being threatened. To hold onto power, he resorts to the “story” ritual, during which one prisoner must tell stories for an entire night. The young pickpocket he chooses is not a storyteller, but he is haunted by the tale of Zama King.
