African Metropolis

4.30pm: African Metropolis project presentation : A unique partnership towards new African cinema

African Metropolis is a unique series of short films from seven African mega cities. The series aims to promote African directors and their urban tales from Lagos, Abidjan, Dakar, Cairo, Nairobi, Kinshasa and Johannesburg. The series is produced by Big World Cinema (Steven Markovitz) in partnership with the Goethe-Institut South Africa and with support from GTBank and the Hubert Bals Fund.

African Metropolis

African Metropolis is a unique series of short films from seven African mega cities. The series aims to promote African directors and their urban tales from Lagos, Abidjan, Dakar, Cairo, Nairobi, Kinshasa and Johannesburg. The series is produced by Big World Cinema (Steven Markovitz) in partnership with the Goethe-Institut South Africa and with support from GTBank and the Hubert Bals Fund.

The films will be launched at the Durban International Film Festival and the Rotterdam International Film Festival.

Steven Markovitz is actively working in production and distribution across the African continent with his company Big World Cinema. Among others he has produced Pumzi by Wanuri Kahiu and Viva Riva! by Djo Munga.

Vincent Moloi, an African Metropolis filmmaker, worked in Soweto Community Television, completed his Media Studies at Boston Media House/RAU, then interned at the SABC. He has made a number of documentaries, including Men of Gold for the series Black on White, which won the Jameson Encounters Audience award 2006. He was nominated by Encounters as an African Trailblazer at MIPDOC 2007. Moloi produces his films through his production company Hamaloi.


Goethe Institut

The Goethe-Institut is the cultural institute of the Federal Republic of Germany with a global reach. The Institut is active throughout the continent of Africa.
